The term cosmeceutical is a hybrid of the words cosmetic and pharmaceutical. A cosmeceutial skincare product, in my opinion, should contain active ingredients, in high concentrates, that are clinically proven to make a difference. These high concentrated active ingredients have the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin, where collagen, elastin and cellular activity takes place, leading to more noticeable, visible and long term changes to the skin. Conditions such as rosacea, pigmentation, ageing, acne and dehydrated skins can all be improved through the use of cosmeceutical skin care products.
The difference between a Cosmetic and a Cosmeceutical
Cosmetic products that are available in department stores, supermarkets and chemists can only provide temporary results, masking underlying issues. Although some may contain active ingredients, these actives will only be at a low concentrate. They are usually full of chemicals and preservatives unless you have chosen a natural or organic brand. The focus is on the marketing of the product and the feel good sensation when the product is used.
A cosmeceutical, as I said above, contains high concentrated active ingredients that will lead to more noticeable, visible and long term changes to the skin. These products will be backed by science.
